frequently asked questions

Is the water safe?
Water, is supplied by the municipal water district of Kitale and rain water is also harvested, treated and used. It is safe for bathing and cooking but as is the case anywhere in Africa, drinking tap water should be avoided. Bottled drinking water is available for purchase at the house and is also readily available in town.

What services are available in Kitale?
There are several banks (some with ATM machines) located in town where money can be changed. Three large supermarkets, internet cafes and small restaurants are also available for your convenience. There is a golf club with an 18 hole golf course on the outskirts of town where temporary membership can be purchased to gain access.

Are there mosquitos?
Yes, but since the elevation is quite high the mosquito problem is not as severe as the coastal and lowland areas. However all beds are furnished with mosquito nets and a little bug spray at evening time will give you peace of mind.

What if I get sick?
We work in part with sister Freda and her staff who own and operate a small hospital on the outskirts of town. There are several doctor's offices in the town center as well as a district hospital and several well stocked pharmacists where almost any medicine requirements you my have can be met.

What about security?
We do have security service at Brittany's House 24/7. A watchman is on duty at night between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. while our staff watch over who comes and goes during the day. The compound is fenced and the house is also equipped with alarms. No worries.

How far is Kitale from Nairobi?
Kitale is about 360 km on a scenic road from Nairobi. Unfortunately though it's a grueling 7 to 8 hours because of the poor road conditions. Aero Kenya offer flights twice daily (except Sunday a.m.) from Nairobi's Wilson airport to Eldoret which is the nearest large town to Kitale. The flight takes around 45 mins. then a 1½ hour taxi ride costing about $50 will get you to Kitale.

What's the weather like?
Although Kitale is just north of the equator it's located at about 6300 ft above sea level and so has a very pleasant temperate climate. Seasons are measured by rainfall rather than temperature change. March, April and May is when 'long rains' are expected while August through November is considered 'short' rainy season. December, January and February are typically the driest and therefore the warmest months. Spectacular thunder storms can often be seen over Mount Elgon to the north west while a canopy of stars can be observed on clear night skies.
