A growing agricultural town situated in the highlands of western Kenya, Kitale is an ideal base for travelers wishing to explore Mount Elgon or a stopping point for those going on to west Pokot, Turkana and Sudan. Located at 6300 feet above sea level the region boasts a temporate climate with extremely fertile land known as being the bread basket of Kenya. It was for these resons that Kitale was heavily settled during the 1920's and 30's during colonial times. Prior to colonialism and up to the 19th century the old settlement of Quitale was established as a slave trading center, upon which a country golf club built during colonial times was established. Kitale now offers modern day supermarkets, banks and internet cafes along with a small museum.
